ADOC 2021 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT
BIODIVERSITY
We are continuously working on promoting the conservation of the environment and the sustainable use of natural resources.
We understand the responsibility of working within the MMBR. We have implemented effective ecological management
procedures and monitoring programs to safeguard the survival of wildlife present in the biosphere reserve and destruction of
marine environment.
MANGROVES
In the UAE, there are approximately 4,000 ha of mangrove, of which 2,500 ha are found in Abu Dhabi. Mangroves are one of
Abu Dhabi’s key ecological assets and part of EAD’s Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network. Mangroves are classified as a
‘’critical habitat’’ within Abu Dhabi. It is considered a ‘’Blue Carbon’’ habitat type because it is a coastal and marine habitat that
can sequester and store carbon. It is a home for various species of crustacean, fish and birds including the migratory Greater
Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus – LC (IUCN and local IUCN).
At ADOC, we have engaged in the cultivation and preservation of the mangroves in Mubarraz Island for the past 30 years.
Planting mangrove has been a continuous effort by us to sustain this important habitat. The mangroves along the Mubarraz
Causeway and island shorelines cover approximately 16.5 ha and we planted an additional 19,670 saplings in 2021, a total of
approximately 130,000 trees and saplings.
Furthermore, to offset the impact of the construction of two new culvert systems along the Mubarraz Causeway, 300 mangroves
trees and saplings were translocated to a new tidal channel further south along the causeway in 2019. The relocation effort – the
largest of its kind attempted - tested the influence of tidal inundation, freshwater treatment, and initial plant size on the survival
